Hello Book Friends!  I hope ya’ll are having a fantastic Monday! 🙂

After a month hiatus from my local library,  I went and visited last week. (I racked up a hefty fine over the holidays because I had SO MANY books out even though I was only four days late.  I didn’t want another one so soon so I took a short break, but I’ve returned, finally.)

I’ve seen Shadow of the Fox by Julie Kagawa on bookstagram lately, so when I saw it at the library I decided to give it a go.  I LOVED her Iron Fey series.  Not so much the Talon Series, and I haven’t even attempted the Immortal Series yet. (I’d love to know if any of you’ve read it though, and what you thought of the series!)

I’m SUPER HAPPY I decided to check this book out! 😍 The synopsis sounded amazing, and so I decided to dive right into as the FIRST book to read on my 2019 TBR pile.  Even though I made up my mind about only reading 4 books a month which I already planned out, I just couldn’t RESIST reading this one.

It was AMAZING!  I must say that this is my favorite book of hers that I’ve read so far and I loved EVERY minute of it! It involves Japanese folklore (which I love learning about!) – specifically a kitsune (a.k.a. fox or fox spirit) as well as other yokai (supernatural spirits, demons, and monsters, etc.), ninja, samurai, and ronin!   This book had my past anime and manga loving-self squealing with delight! 😍 (Also my dear anime friends – does this not have an Inuyasha vibe to it? Because I keep picturing it!)

It’s written mainly from two, but sometimes three point of views and I’ve read that in so many books lately I sort of expect it these days! 🙂

I absolutely ADORED the two main characters, Yumeko and Tatsumi, SO SO VERY MUCH! They were very well-written fleshed out-characters.  There is a lot of character development and set-up, and it is all so very cute! Also, there are a lot of character introductions and the pacing is done extremely well.  I loved the side characters and villains too!

Needless to say, I loved the fantasy world-building and thought it was done fabulously.  I was immediately immersed in this world.  Some might say the story is a bit slow, but I disagree. I’ve read books in this type of setting that were much, much slower.  I thought this one was set at a good pace, and I wasn’t bored for a second! I thought that there was plenty of action throughout the book and a lot of risk-taking on everyone’s part. Everything is super-exciting and fun to read.

And again, there’s a cliffhanger!!!!! Aaah! I want the next book in my hands asap!

So, overall I absolutely LOVED this book so much I have the heart eyes and all. 😍😍 It’s going to be a difficult reading year, because all the books I read in the future now need to live up to this standard! I loved the world building, the characters, the pacing, the action, the plot, and pretty much everything else about the book!  I highly recommend this to anyone interested in Japanese folklore or culture, and anime and manga fans. And people who like fantasy. (Basically everyone, because I loved this okay?)

Anyway, these are my non-spoilery opinions and thoughts about this book! Let me know what your thoughts are in the comments below! Also, thanks for reading!

holiday

Hello Book Friends!  It’s just another Monday closer to Thanksgiving, and I couldn’t be more excited for the holidays coming up! 🙂 And since Christmas IS coming up soon I was in the mood to read something for the upcoming holiday! Those HALLMARK movies just never set the right tone for me to feel like I get the whole story, so I wanted to READ something Christmasy. When I saw that this one was also a HISTORICAL FICTION book, I requested this one, immediately. It’s not a YA novel like I typically read, but sometimes I need a break from those!

I’m so glad I did.  This story was ADORABLE.  Not gonna lie, it’s a straight up fluffy cute romance novel.  Not something I’d pick up to read every day, but something that I enjoy once in a while.  And this one was perfect.

I love how it starts out.  The two main characters don’t understand each other at all, and sets the tone for the whole story.  But it’s so much FUN! The story was well-written, and it was another fast-paced book I’ve read recently.  I wasn’t expecting it to be so short, – I didn’t realize it was a novella, (my bad) but for this type of story there was no reason to drag anything out.  You learn a lot about the characters in such a short amount of time.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book.  I recommend it to anyone looking for a simple sweet romance with a historical fiction edge to it and taking place during a nice Christmas setting.   I loved the main characters, (some of the side characters not so much, but they kind of remind me people I know in real life so there’s that! ;)) and the overall plot and the simplicity of it all.

Anyway, these are my non-spoilery opinions and thoughts about this book! Let me know what your thoughts are in the comments below! Also, thanks for reading!

changeling

Hello Book Friends!  I hope you all are having another magical start to the week! I requested this book on NetGalley a few months ago because the synopsis seemed really FUN and I was looking for something different so I requested and was approved for this e-arc.  I hadn’t read one of those in a while, so I thought this book would be a good chance. Plus, It’s a historical fiction, so there’s that too! You can read all about it on Goodreads HERE!

Personally, I thought this story was SUPER CUTE!  I loved the main character “Cassandra”.  I related a lot with her personality, and I loved her sarcasm throughout the book.  The side characters were also super fun!  I loved her two new friends! Also, there’s a love interest involved (and surprisingly no triangle involved) which was adorable!

This book has a slight Harry Potter/Tempest and Slaughter feel, but don’t go into it expecting the expansiveness of those books.  It has magic – which I would have liked to have seen more of, but I thought it was still really good and well done.  I believe this is a first in a series, so I am looking forward to reading more of these books in the future.

The story is very well written, and I had a hard time putting it down.  It was fast paced which I enjoyed and I loved all the historical fiction aspects to it as well.  The author really set the tone for the book, and I could imagine being at school with “Cassandra.” I enjoyed the antagonist side of these books, they were really well done.

Overall, this was an EXTREMELY enjoyable light read with magic and historical fiction incorporated together! It was fast paced, well -written and had an adorable plot.  The characters had relatable personalities, and there was some sass and sarcasm involved which is always a good thing. Since the book was published in August, I look forward to getting a physical copy soon!  I’d love to have it on my shelves.

Anyway, these are my non-spoilery opinions and thoughts about this book! Let me know what your thoughts are in the comments below! Also, thanks for reading!

Hello Book Friends! I hope ya’ll are having a great Monday!

I’ve been a bit inactive for a couple of weeks, but that was due to illness!  It was difficult to even pick up a book and read, but I’m much better now, and able to focus on words.  I just wanted to let you know that I haven’t abandoned this or intentionally ignored any of your comments! I will be getting to those too! 🙂

With that being said, I just wanted to mention that NaNoWriMo begins THIS WEEK! I’m  internally screaming here because I am so not prepared for this. I’m still catching up with a few things but there’s two more full days of  October left – so hopefully I can get prepared before Thursday! My posts next month might be more geared towards my writing for NaNoWriMo than book reviews, so be prepared for that.

Have you seen the cover of SEA WITCH?  It’s such a beautiful cover.  That combined with the fact that it’s a fairy-tale retelling, made it very appealing to me. (I’ve been reading like one or two a month!) Not to mention it’s another Little Mermaid one, and I was sold.  I picked it up from library a couple days before I read it! 🙂

It wasn’t what I expected, but it happened to be a good thing!  I really enjoyed the main character Evie.  I must admit the side characters were a bit flat, and to be honest I didn’t really care about them much.  So the main character, and the villan’s story were all I happened to care about.

For a fantasy story, it starts off a bit slow, but I was still invested in reading it. All the good stuff happens at the end, but the story was well-written.  I couldn’t put it down because of the writing, and then towards the middle of the book things start to really pick up. There was some magic in the story too, but I didn’t feel like it was as strong as it could have been.

There were historical aspects to this story that made it really INTRIGUING to read. I enjoy when authors incorporate that sort of things into their stories.

Also, the ending was GREAT.  Things didn’t pan out the way I’d expected it to, but I ENJOYED how it went down. And it had some pretty good plot twists. It was very creatively thought out! 🙂

Overall I really enjoyed it.  I liked Evie, the main character and I wanted to find out more about her story, and what happened with her friend.  The side characters weren’t as good as they could have been, but the story was well-written.  I was hooked because of that, and things finally started to pick up to point where I didn’t want to put it down.  I liked how history was intertwined with the story.  I thought it was a good read and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a little mermaid re-telling.

Anyway, these are my non-spoilery opinions and thoughts about this book! Let me know what your thoughts are in the comments below! Also, thanks for reading!

Hello Book Friends!  I hope ya’ll are having a great Monday! 🙂

A while back I picked up this book at my local library, where I get most of my books before I purchase them when I can afford them. I mean, who wants to buy a book and then be really disappointed for paying all that money for a book you dislike?! Amirite? 🙂

Anyway, my library displays all the new YA books on certain shelves and this one caught my attention because the cover looked amazing.  Naturally, I picked it up and was sold the second I saw the word “dragon.” I love dragons, what can I say?

I don’t know why, but I kept putting this book off for months.  I renewed it several times, until I decided to put this on my TBR for September and I AM SO GLAD I DID! I really regret not reading it sooner!  It was AMAZING.

The story was set at a fast pace, and I couldn’t put the book down for ANYTHING. It was just that good! The writing style was fantastic, too and made it easy for me to rush through it!

The main character, Asha, is fantastic.  She is a hardcore warrior, independent, strong, and FUN to read about. She’s someone I’d want as my best friend.  She’s got a lot of growth and development in this book and that is what makes the story. The side characters are also really strong, opinionated people, and I absolutely loved them all.  Also, there’s romance, because what’s a little YA without some.  It’s not a very strong one, compared to other books but still, it was ADORABLE! Not all fantasy books have to have such strong ones. And the evil characters were as evil as evil characters can be.

I loved the world-building with the DRAGONS (I loved them so much!), and how stories and myths worked in this world. Some of the plots twists took me by surprise! I didn’t see them coming AT ALL!

So, overall I thought that this book was WONDERFUL.  I thought the fast pace made for an adventure that I couldn’t put down. The writing style made it easy for me to read.  The world building was creative and new and super fun to read about.  The main character is AWESOME, as well as the side characters! Also, some awesome plot twists that got me good! I hope there’s a sequel, because I am so looking forward to what happens next!

Anyway, these are my non-spoilery opinions and thoughts about this book! Let me know what your thoughts are in the comments below! Also, thanks for reading!

Hello Book Friends!  I hope ya’ll are having an amazing start to the week! 🙂

Ash Princess has been on my radar for many months! Not only did the title of the book grab my attention but so did the cover. (It’s so pretty!)  It’s a fantasy novel, has princesses and evil kings, and what else could I want, lol. 😂 So naturally, I picked it up from the library.  MONTHS AGO.  Like in June. I checked out like fifty books from the library that day, so that is probably why I haven’t gotten to it until now. I have renewed it like five times already because I am a library renewing master! 😂

I am slightly regretful that I didn’t read it SOONER.😣  I absolutely ADORED the main character.  She’s in a precarious situation, and she has to make decisions based on what she thinks is right.   She’s got trust issues, and has every right to be. She remembers the way things were. Life is HARD!

Her relationships with people were totally relatable.  She faces tons of difficulty and she keeps her wit about her. This book is quite dark, but I love those kind of those things! >_<

The love triangle was a bit overdone (most of them are these days, though so I didn’t really have a problem with that).  Also, I was rooting for both pairings!  That rarely happens to me.  There were bits here and there of the story that were predictable but that’s to be expected. It is a fantasy book after all! 🙂 The side characters were awesome and I loved each of them.

In this book the villain was so evil and I really enjoyed that aspect of it.  (The fact that he’s really cruel NOT the actual horrible and terrible deeds that he did.) I’m glad that he wasn’t slightly somewhat good and just needed to see the errors of his ways, kind of villain.  He’s ruthless, cunning and conniving.

The magic in this book seemed a bit weak compared to others and I honestly think the book could have done without it, but who knows.  After the events of the first book, (which is a cliffhanger because authors love to keep antagonizing their readers this way,) maybe the second one will change my mind.

Overall, I really ENJOYED it.  I loved the all the characters, I related with the main character somewhat, loved her determination, and the evil villain was truly evil. The love triangle was FUN to read about.  The writing style flowed really well and it was an easy read.  I can’t wait to find out what happens in the book!

I’ve been hearing about this book for the past several years and always mentally made a note that I’d eventually put it on paper as a book that I wanted to eventually check out. However, my memory is no longer a good trustworthy thing, and we are no longer on good terms because of it. It needed mattered, because this book was only published in the states a few months ago, which I did not know but still. The memory of that note resurfaced when I saw this book at a thrift shop and purchased it, and brought it home with me. The book always happened to be in my line of sight and I thought that it would be a good idea to add it to my TBR for September.  Which I did.

First of all – I love the main character, Stephanie.  She’s easy to relate to, she’s smart, she’s witty and she’s dying for a new adventure like the rest of us are.  Basically, she’s all of us.  I love that the setting is taking place in Ireland, and you can definitely tell that from the way Stephanie and Skulduggery interact.

The sarcasm from Skulduggery was AWESOME.  I practically lived for seeing what would come out of his mouth next! The side characters were and villans were FUN and hilarious too! Even if they were a little evil.

Also, the world building and magic were pretty awesome too! I can see how this is setting up for the next books in the series – WHICH I WANT this instant.

So, overall this book was FANTASTIC!  I loved the main characters, as well as the side characters!  They were all amazing!  There was so much WIT and SARCASM that I couldn’t put the book down, because you know I live for it! The magic and the worldbuilding were all so much FUN! I can’t wait to fund out what happens next!
